The Journey: The Conqueror’s Rebellion, by Susan Tufford, transports the reader to a pre-medieval time when humans and dragons struggled for control of the earth.
Caught in the desperate conflict is Ret, the young son of the knight Branmar. When Ret becomes trapped in the underground catacombs, his life is saved only by the selfless ministrations of a dragon whose maternal instincts outweigh her fear of humans.
Whisking her readers further along, the author presents a gorgeous panorama of life during his period of time: knights beholden to their king; friendly household animals; nut cakes and ale savored by the adults and served with grace by household retainers grateful to the lord of the manor.
Added to the mixture of this poignant tale is the half-mad Dusett, who pines inconsolably for a lost love that can never be hers. In the end, the story is one of fantasy, dragons, and mystics, all of which play a role in facilitating the “coming of age” of the story’s young hero.
Thus, The Journey, in the tradition and sweep of Dickens, demonstrates the human nature and the power of love remain constant, despite the passage of generations.
