Write Ways to Win Writing Contests, by John Howard Reid
I honestly couldn't put the book down. It's written in a lively, engaging style by an author who knows about writing contests, not just because he enters (and wins) rather a lot of them but because he also judges one. Reid takes you behind the scenes, revealing not-so-obvious "secrets" of the contesting world that one might never guess just from reading a contest's submission guidelines. ... Read More...

Since this site has been named to Writer's Digest 101 Best Websites for five years in a row, I figured it was time to take a look. It's a fascinating site packed with articles and interviews - dozens of author interviews and "industry" interviews with editors, agents, publishers, etc. My one quibble is that I'd like to see the author interviews focus more on tips than on "tell me about your latest book" -- but it's a small quibble. The authors (and contributors) have put in a truly awesome amount of work on this site!

Thousands of dollars in prize money is given to writers every year through contests and competitions. Each year, hundreds of literary magazines, universities, memorial funds, and publications seek out the best of the best -- the best poetry, the best fiction, the best essays and memoirs, the best books, the best children's literature, the best scripts and screenplays. And while winning cash is nice, winning a prestigious writing award can be an amazing boost to your writing career, perhaps even the entry ticket you need to get the attention of a publisher! Don't let these opportunities slip away. Writing to Win brings you details of nearly 1600 writing competitions, with all the information you need to know to help you prepare and submit just what the judges are looking for. You could spend hundreds of hours tracking down this information yourself--but we've done all the hard work for you! So spend those hours crafting that perfect story, poem, or article -- and go forth and win! The completely updated 2012 edition has over 450 completely new listings!
A New Year's Gift from Writing-World.com
Where Did 2011 Go?
If you've been asking yourself that question, Writing-World.com has just developed a tool that can help. A Writer's Year is a 365-day planner designed for writers -- not, like most planners on the market, for folks who work 8-5. Use it to plan your schedule, and to track your time -- because you can't manage what you can't measure! If you wonder why your projects aren't getting completed, and why days fly by leaving you wondering what you've accomplished, this planner is for you. It includes a place to record your achievements and "tasks completed" every day -- so that you won't reach the end of a week feeling as if you just haven't accomplished anything. Each week opens with a place to record your to-do list, deadlines, and goals for the week. Plus, start each week inspired by a quote from a famous writer.
And it's free. You can download the planner in PDF format, or download it as an Excel file. The planner is also available in hardcopy from Lulu.com. Here's how to get your planner (right-click the links to save directly to your hard drive):
